Celebrating over three decades of art practice, Mike Nicholls has earned the respect of the art world. One of the founding members of Roar Studios, Melbourne, he has gone on to represent Australia in the Inami International Wooden Sculpture Camp in Japan, 2011 and was the 2018 Winner of the the Montalto Sculpture Prize, Victoria. His work has been exhibited widely in public and private galleries across Australia and is featured in many major National Art Collections.
For the past fifteen years, he has been travelling to Aurukun and Lockhart River in Cape York to share his woodcarving skills with the local indigenous people. “When I first started teaching there, woodcarving had died out, so I tried to reintroduce it,” he recalls.
The time Nicholls has spent with the Cape York community and the friendships he’s made on visits there have inspired many of his recent paintings and sculptures, which draw heavily on the connection of spirit to land.
